Why Your Contributions Are Important PDF Print E-mail

Dear Members and Friends of the Wayne E. Oates Institute,

In challenging economic times we all reevaluate where and how we spend our money and what investments are worthwhile. Therefore, I would like to introduce you to Kei Okada, and let the nature of his ministry give you insight into the importance of investing in the work of the Wayne E. Oates Institute.

Following his study at Sophia University in Tokyo, Kei Okada completed the Master of Divinity program at Union Theological Seminary. He completed Clinical Pastoral Education programs at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the “Program for Children with AIDS” of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Since 2000 Okada has served as a Pastoral Counselor at Housing Works Adult Day Health Care programs for the homeless living with HIV/AIDS. He has been a Spiritual Care Counselor with Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care since 2006.

Like many of those who benefit from the Oates Institute’s educational programs, Okada has chosen to invest his time and energy giving care to individuals who are living on the edge of life; individuals who are homeless, children and adults suffering from serious illness, or those near the end of their physical existence. While serving others on a daily basis, Okada has identified the Oates Institute’s seminars as “an encouraging source for my motivation and new joy in continuous learning and growth, fellowship and prayer.” Following Okada’s participation in the 2009 seminar, Finding Hope When There Is No Cure, he wrote:

This workshop has deepened my understanding and insight into my patients' needs and into how I may sensitively interact with their search for hope.
For over 16 years we have faithfully worked to offer continuing education that enhances the quality of care given by individuals like Kei Okada; chaplains, congregational leaders, therapists, health ministers, nurses, clergy, physicians, and other caregivers. Will you please help support this vital work by clicking on the link below to make a contribution.Your faithful investment in the Oates Institute is not only a part of our legacy, but it is a part of your legacy and it sustains this important work. Thank you.

Gratefully,
