Winter Seminar Schedule Adjusted in Rescheduling Envisioning the Future of Spiritual Care
When we rescheduled the upcoming online conference, Envisioning the Future of Spiritual Care, for February 5-14, 2014, we also needed to adjust the schedule for the seminars that are planned for the winter months. The schedule has been revised and is now up to date on the site. One thing that we were able to do is provide another week between the holidays and the start of the January seminars, which will now be held January 13-31. The January book discussion group, which will be on Ira Byock's The Best Care Possible, will be January 27-31.

Often a Great Teacher, Sometimes a Great Inconvenience
My cancer, the Weed as I call it, has been a great teacher over the past almost four years as I have explored pastoral and spiritual care firsthand from a patient perspective. It has provided deeper insights into who I am as a person, spouse, friend, and colleague. Insights into who I am as a creative, caregiver, and educator. It has also provided firsthand experience and insight into my own expectations regarding pastoral and spiritual care as well as our common quest for meaning and sense of belonging. It has made me aware of our opportunities for activating our spiritual resources for generating hope, energy, and attitude in living with a serious illness or injury.

A Note from Our Board Chair Elect
We need your help! As we celebrate 20 years of providing outstanding distant learning experiences, professional continuing education, dynamic on-line conferences, and an incredible resource library, we, like all of our non-profit organization friends, struggle to attain sustainability.
I have benefited personally and professionally from the outstanding seminars since the beginning of the Institute. I have had the privilege of working on committees and the board for many years and have been astonished at the dedication of the many members who have supported and contributed to the Institutes’ work. As the Board Chair Elect, I am very excited about the future of the Institute even though we face many challenges.

Cancelled Healing in the Light Fundraiser
Much to everyone’s disappointment the “Healing in the Light” fundraiser scheduled for October 20, 2013 was cancelled due to a lack of early registrations. Oates board member, Dr. Clifford Kuhn, better known as the “Laugh Doctor” had created a very special event that would have not only entertained but would have benefited the Oates Institute and the Women’s Global Cancer Alliance.

Last Day to Register for the October Book Group Discussion
For many of us, the search to belong has become as meaningful, if not more so, than the search for meaning. In an age when many people are asking where they belong and find meaning, these searchers are redefining the rules of belonging. They are redefining who is family, who is neighbor, and who is part of their community. They are searching for meaningful forms of belonging, family, and community. In his book, The Search to Belong: Rethinking Intimacy, Community, and Small Groups, Joseph Myers helps congregational leaders and others to discern key ingredients that people look for in community and to develop new understandings of how the use of space serves as a key element for experiencing belonging and community. Join us October 21-25 for a discussion of this book, including a Live Discussion with the author on Thursday evening, October 24.
