Wayne Oates Discusses Writing
-- (A video interview, Part One)
"I wanted to be
a writer since I was in the 6th Grade," said Dr.
Wayne Oates in this 1991 interview with Claudia Crawford. As
the author of 57 books, Wayne Oates gave credit to the
advice he had received from his writing mentor, Dr. Gaines
Dobbins, 'Write a little copy every day, Wayne.' So that
is what I do."

of this interview (7:14) or to download an MP3 copy,

New
Online Seminars for May:
Three new seminars
will be offered in the May 7-25 session. These seminars
are approved for continuing education with the National
Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) and for Continuing
Chaplaincy Education (CCE) with the Association of Professional
Chaplains (APC).
Celts,
Labyrinths, and Postmodern Spirituality
Presenter:
Daniel Meister, D.Min. / 12.0 contact
hours (CCEs, NBCC, WEOI)
What
does Celtic Christian spirituality possess that some
say a modern approach to life and faith lacks? Why
are people drawn to the Celtic tradition and how
can it serve a purposeful role in forming and fulfilling
the spiritual lives of those who seek greater wholeness?
This seminar will encourage participants to explore
the unique contributions and the major distinctions
of Celtic Christian spirituality.

Encountering
Depression and Anxiety in Ministry
Presenter: Vicki Hollon, D.Min.
/ 12.0 contact hours (CCEs, NBCC,
WEOI)
Religious
leaders
are not
immune
to depression
and anxiety;
however,
it may
be more
difficult
for religious
leaders
to admit
to themselves
or others
that
they
suffer
from
either. This
seminar
is not
only
for the
direct
benefit
of the
religious
leaders,
it is
also
for those
they
serve. It
is designed
to help
ministers
recognize
symptoms
of clinical
depression
and anxiety
in order
to more
wisely
give
care
to others
and make
appropriate
referrals
as needed.

When
Children Suffer:
Care for Children and Families
Experiencing Violence
Facilitator:
Kathy Manis Findley, M.Div. / 12.0 contact
hours (CCEs, NBCC, WEOI)
"Examination,
inquiry, and analysis reveal that the
depth of the injury to the psyche of
a survivor of intimate violence rests
squarely on relationship," wrote
Kathy Manis Findley, director of Safe
Places. She goes on to explain, "When
relationship is violated, a person is
left vulnerable and susceptible to the
onslaught of physical and mental illness
and the child experiences developmental
challenges." Early
recognition of the violence expands a
child's safety net and enables intervention
that may prevent more devastating consequences.

"The
Care of the Authoritarian, Power-Ridden Person"
an excerpt from The Care of Troublesome People by
Wayne Oates
It
can be especially challenging to approach troubled
and troublesome people in ways that are not dismissive,
but instead are caring, affirming, and grounded in
God's grace. In this third chapter of Dr. Wayne
Oates' book, The
Care of Troublesome People,
he reflects on the care of authoritarian
and power-ridden persons.
