Human
Values and Health Care and The
Power to Bless
Among
the Seminars Offered in April
Human Values and Health Care is a three week seminar developed to help professional
care givers address ethical questions raised
by patients and family members in the care of the aged, the impaired,
and the institutionalized. This seminar
engages participants in reflective dialogue around presentations
by biomedical ethicist Dr. Paul Simmons, medical ethicist and
neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Sexton, and nursing professor Dr. Kay
Roberts.
The Power to Bless seminar uses the writings
of Dr. Myron Madden and three popular
films to consider the meaning of the presence and absence of blessing. Seminar participants will also explore the interaction
between parents and children in the giving and receiving of blessing
as well as the giving and receiving of blessing outside the family.
Other seminars being offered in April include:
- Baseball, Ghosts, and Field of Dreams:
A Narrative Journey Toward Wholeness
- Care of Troublesome People
- Hope as a Dynamic
for Healing
- Integrating Spirituality and Health
- Substance Abuse and the Family

Bonus: "The
Institutional and the Personal "
from Pastoral Counseling by Wayne Oates
Continuing
with the next chapter from the book, Pastoral Counseling,
Wayne Oates writes, "The pastoral counselor usually walks the
narrow ridge between the demands of the institutions that support
him and the needs of the personal lives of the people with
whom he counsels. Often the needs of these persons coincide
with the needs of the institutions. ... More often
they conflict." This chapter
provides a careful study of this twin demand upon the pastoral
counselor and the suggestion of some ways to manage this demand.
