Georgine Buckwalter on "Growing Spiritually through the Transitions of Aging" Video of Presentation Online (Subscriber Bonus)

Rev. Dr. Georgine Buckwalter, Director of Pastoral Care at the Episcopal Church Home in Louisville, Kentucky and Chaplain of St. Luke’s Chapel, challenged the American idea that “successful aging” is when one can live proudly and independently without the help of anyone else and instead suggested, “successful aging can happen when one is flat on their back on oxygen – or when one is graciously receiving care as well as giving it.” She went on to say that “holy surrender to circumstances or holy cooperation with circumstances is never spiritual failure!” Rev. Dr. Georgine Buckwalter

Call for Papers -- Spirituality and Age-ing: Journeying Towards New Futures

The Wayne E. Oates Institute and the Center for Spirituality, Health, and Disabilities are currently accepting submissions for papers to be presented during the November 3-14, 2008 online Conference on Aging. (Or Ageing if you are from the UK.)   Issues related to aging that we seek to address during the conference include:

Disabilities, spiritual growth, Erickson’s generativity vs. stagnation and Integrity vs. despair, healthcare resources, the needs of caregivers, reclaiming relationships, reconciling the past,  the benefits of a multigenerational lifestyle, creativity in later life, learning from the sage or passing on the wisdom, finding meaning in retirement, reframing the aging experience, financial challenges and opportunities, relocation versus dislocation, coping with change

Submissions should be 2,500 – 3,500 words and follow the APA publication guidelines.  With your submission we need a brief bio and photograph of you as the author.  If you submit an original paper, we would also like to have publication rights in order to publish it in the Oates Journal.   Submissions should be sent to: Chris Hammon <chris@oates.org>

The Oates Award was established to honor Dr. Wayne E. Oates and the award is given to a person that has demonstrated exceptional qualities in the field of Pastoral Care, specifically in the areas of ministry, leadership, and personal service.  This award has been given annually since 1989.
