If ministers are not constantly learning and unlearning, they are becoming less and less qualified to serve.(Leonard Sweet)

Whether one is navigating through new stages of one's ministry career or adapting to cultural change, lifelong learning is a critical part of the process. This Learning Module features three presentations that address why lifelong learning is a concern, lifelong learning as a spiritual discipline, and emerging opportunities for lifelong learning.

  • "Theological Foundations for Lifelong Learning"

  • "The Digital Revolution, Connected Learning, and Emerging Opportunities"

    These presentation have been prepared by Drs. A. Christopher Hammon and Vicki Hollon based on their collaborative research on continuing education for ministry and their coauthored dissertation, Thriving in the Whirlwind. Rev. Vicki Hollon is the Executive Director of the Wayne E. Oates Institute. Chris Hammon is Editor and Online Developer for the Oates Institute. Both also serve as adjunct faculty for Drew University's Theological School and are active members of the Society for the Advancement of Continuing Education for Ministry.

Learning Objectives:

Following this learning module one should be able to:

    1. Recognize the need for continuing professional growth

    2. Identify personal learning style preferences

    3. Select beneficial resources for continuing education

    4. Develop a personal learning plan

    CEU Requirements:
  1. Read through each of the presentations listed above.

  2. Reflect on each in light of your own experience and context.

  3. Write a 300-500 word summary of this self-reflection for each presentation responding to two of the following questions:
    a) From your professional perspective, what are the most relevant issues addressed in this presentation?
    b) Do you agree with this presenter’s perspective? Please use your professional experience to document why you do or do not agree.
    c) Discuss ways that you might implement the ideas in this presentation within your professional setting.
    d) Discuss how you might collaborate with professionals from fields other than your own, to address the issues discussed in this presentation?

  4. Submit the CEU application with the written reflections.
