Facilitator: Dick Gilbert, Ph.D.,

The
recognition that children grieve is a fact that society

and strategies for prevention and response.

Dancing
in the Dark: Alzheimer's in 3/4 Time
Presenters: Patricia Pickett,
D.Min., and Samuel Johnson III
12.0 contact hours
As
one providing spiritual care to those caught
in the world of Alzheimer's disease, how do
you go where the person is and meet their needs
while allowing them to be who they are in the
moment? This three week seminar presented by
Dr. Patricia Pickett and Samuel Johnson will
engage participants in working through the
arts and spirituality, which are the last things
to go when someone begins to slip through knowing.
Fighting
the Tiger: The Psychological and
Spiritual Effects of Traumatic
Stress
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator:
David Fair, D.Min., B.C.E.T.S.
Modern
day technology has placed wars, hurricanes, and
sexual assaults in our living rooms. What used
to be the unthinkable happens on a daily basis,
leaving a path of psychological and spiritual
trauma in its wake. Clergy members
must deal with these traumas spilling over into
church, hospital, and counseling settings. In
this seminar experts in the areas of trauma stemming
from natural disaster, sexual assault, and military
deployment, guide ministers through a process
of becoming aware of traumatic stress and helping
to facilitate the emotional and spiritual healing.

This
seminar helps professional care givers
prepare to address ethical questions
being raised by patients and family
members in the care of the aged,
the impaired, and the institutionalized.
The seminar engages participants
in reflective dialogue around presentations
by biomedical ethicist Dr. Paul Simmons,
medical ethicist and neurosurgeon
Dr. Robert Sexton, and nursing professor
Dr. Kay Roberts.
Ministry
to an Aging Society
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator:
Martha Rogers, M.Div.
Whether
in the congregational, healthcare, or community
setting, numerous aging issues that need to
be proactively addressed are going unconsidered.
In addition, the challenges are exacerbated
by a societal ambivalence that in general ignores
some of the deeper issues of self-esteem, meaning,
and sense of purpose experienced in the aging
process. The primary goal for this seminar
is to provide a constructive and integrated
format for addressing some of the spiritual,
mental, and physical health issues of Senior
Adults as they encounter new challenges in
the aging process.
Spirituality
and Mental Illness
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator: Rose Ann Briotte, M.Div.
One
in five people in the United States have or will
have mental illness sometime in their life. More
than five million people in the United States
alone suffer from serious chronic mental illness.
Through
an interdisciplinary approach integrating spirituality
and mental health, this seminar will enable professional
care givers from the religious, medical, therapeutic,
and social work communities to better recognize
and work with the diverse needs of those who
suffer from mental illness and the needs of those
who are close to them. Reflective dialogue
will be facilitated by a mental health chaplain.
