Care of Self:
Nurturing Silence and Sabbath

January 7-25, 2008
and July 7-25, 2008

Facilitators:
TBA
12.0 contact hours

In the process of giving care to others, care givers often overlook their own practice of self-care. Through peer dialogue around three presentations, this seminar provides participants an opportunity to reflect on their own care regarding rest and personal renewal while learning to observe the sacrament of the present moment and affirm the gift and necessity of rest.

Presentations (one per week):

  • "The Sacrament of the Present Moment"
    by E. Glenn Hinson, Ph.D.

  • "Your Right to Rest"
    by Wayne E. Oates, Ph.D.

  • "Discovering Your Privacy in Order to Nurture Silence"
    by Wayne E. Oates, Ph.D.

Learning Objectives:

Following this seminar, participants should be able to:
  1. Recognize the sacrament of the present moment.

  2. Discern when privacy, rest, and a time of Sabbath are needed.

  3. Give others permission to rest.

  4. Strengthen one's capacity to give one's self permission to rest regularly.

  5. Affirm both the gift and necessity of rest as part of the normal life rhythm.

  6. Advocate the incorporation of regular times of retreat and Sabbath as part of one's own schedule as well as others.

Continuing Education Credit:

This seminar is approved for up to 12 contact hours (1.2 CEUs) of continuing education credit for chaplains, pastoral counselors, social workers, and congregational leaders. The Wayne E. Oates Institute is an approved provider by the National Board of Certified Counselors.

To qualify for the CEUs participants are expected to read the presentations and participate in the email discussion by contributing at least 2 email messages per week. One message is to reflect on the presentations or case studies in light of one's personal experience and context and the second is to respond to someone else’s reflection or inquiry. The evaluation form submitted at the end of the seminar serves as the CEU application. Following your submission of this form you will receive your CEU certificate.
