Congregational Care 101:
An Introduction to Pastoral Care for Lay Persons

February 5-23, 2007
Presenter: Vicki Hollon, D.Min.

Many of us have had the experience of being anxious about what to say when visiting a friend in the hospital, a colleague who has just experienced the death of someone they love, or a neighbor who has just lost a job.  All of us know someone experiencing grief and loss but unfortunately, we are not all comfortable reaching out to that person in the context of their pain and loss.

Most of us need some intentional training and skill development in order to give the wise and loving care that is most helpful.  This seminar is designed as an introduction to that training.  Seminar participants will grow in understanding and become more comfortable visiting the sick.  They will recognize the symptoms of grief and multiple forms of loss.  Participants will become more comfortable as a caring presence for those who are hurting and experience strong feelings.  During the course of the seminar participants will consider the needs of children in grief and they will begin to recognize the importance of caring for a person in the context of their family system.
