He also depicted his hospitalizations as well as his physicians. While a patient in the hospital at Arles following the ear incident, Vincent suffered with hallucinations but was lucid enough between episodes that he was provided studio space in which he produced works surprising in their clarity of observation, acceptance and calm (Figures 24 and 25 -- following).
