If so, the insecurity was short-lived, for Durer was not a man known for a lack of confidence, either in himself or his ability. This is evident in his self-portraits which were the first known in western art. Durer completed three renderings of his young-self as a well-dressed and self-assured dandy (Figures 39, 40 and 41).
