Oates Institute

What we offer

Our mission is singular: To provide a perpetual, international, learning community for caregivers seeking to connect faith and wellbeing.

To do that, the Oates Institute provides pathways for both professionals and for congregations to become more highly attuned and responsive to those who are hurting. And our members also have access to a wide variety of resources.

Our Professional Track offers:

  • Continuing Education and Professional Development credits.
  • More than 40 online seminars available per year.
  • Annual online conferences (1-2 per year), such as Envisioning the Future of Spiritual Care and Spirituality and Palliative Care.
    • Seminars to meet different learning styles.
      • Three-week online interactive seminars led by facilitator(s), which provide provocative, well integrated, academically sound resources for reading and deep reflection. Participants share insights, questions, and musings and responses with fellow learners via confidential email exchange. Up to 12 hours continuing education credit can be earned while experiencing the power and connection of a collaborative learning community.
      • On-line conferences featuring knowledge experts who conduct one hour live presentations via Adobe Connect, which allows for Q & A. These conferences run from one to ten hours over a week or two with an optional email discussion group facilitated concurrently. Power points, articles and original resources are posted by the presenters for richer learning experiences.
    • Collaborative learning experiences that combine the two approaches above.
      • Access to resource library with recorded online conference presentations for continuing education and professional development.

Our Congregational Track offers:

  • Online education/training in pastoral and spiritual care for non-professionals.
  • Affordable, accessible, convenient, four-week seminars.
  • Six modules covering a variety of practical topics such as listening with accurate empathy, do and don’ts of hospital and nursing home visits, setting appropriate emotional boundaries, when and how to refer individuals and families to other resources, and much more.
  • A certificate of achievement for each of the six modules of training completed.

Resources

Specifically designed and maintained for Oates Institute members, this online library contains books, articles and videos by Wayne Oates and many other knowledgeable experts in spiritual and pastoral care.

Using Adobe Connect and other appropriate technology tools, we partner with like-minded organizations and pastoral and spiritual care groups to bring you live (webinar) learning experiences.
